We are trying to revitalize Howard, so why not have a Centennial Giving Tree Program where donors "buy" a tree for Howard Avenue (and beyond).

A sort of the"The Four HHHH's" – $100 Solution for 100 trees to celebrate 100 years on Howard!

A line of trees down both sides of Howard would make a real Centennial statement. F

Yes, it would. But the trees would have to be something other than the spindly ones that are currently being planted around the City. These trees simply do not grow (I can think of several trees that line City streets that simply haven’t grown in years and it’s not an issue of the homeowners not watering them). I don’t know enough about trees to know if the current selection of trees is poor for the location and light, or if the quality of the trees and roots, etc. is so poor that the trees don’t grow.

I just noticed some new plants in front of the Citibank on Howard. They must be replacements those towering Cypresses. These look like English Laurel’s, perhaps. There are also some grasses planted in between. But we need BIG trees on the sidewalks.

I really think it is time to develop a “City of Burlingame Tree Board”. Just trees, nothing else.
Small trees are the norm. Even though the City plants and maintains those trees for free.
I know Russ Cohn has an interest in this area.
Lets put the bug in his ear that the City needs leadership in this area.
By the way, what happened to the trees that were to be replanted at Sams’ Deli?

I am thinking that for one hundred bucks the City could buy a decent tree and rather than dotting individual trees around town/parks, etc. an avenue of new trees would be much more dramatic and be a true living monument of our Centennial. The Giving Tree Program also would not take money from the City coffers.

Sam’s Deli – the latest was December and I think we should put these three long awaited trees on our wish list for Santa.

    Or ….

On the Twelve Days of Christmas, my true love gave to me –
    Three Accolade Pears,
    Two Sam’s hot dogs
and a Crow in a Eucalptus Tree!

  5. I like the idea of planting new trees to celebrate the Centennial. I’m wondering if the Burlingame Historical Society has thought of taking up that task as their contribution to the Centennial celebration. Does anybody know if it’s been considered by them?

I have asked Randy and a member of the Beautification Commission if this could be considered as part of the Centennial celebrations. They sounded positive about the idea (of which they had thought of themselves!) and they are more likely to get it done.
