Tonight’s opening of The Music Man was community theater at its best. Baywood 5th grade teacher, Chris McHugh, stars as the Music Man, a traveling conman who seeks to pass himself off as a professor of music so that he can sell a town enough instruments, lessons and uniforms to create its own marching band. BHS mom-around-town, Susan Melanson, stars as the librarian who, along with the town, is eventually won over by the music man’s charm. Chris’ son, BIS student Soren Royer-McHugh, also is in the play as well as these other familiar Burlingame names: Dimitri Wentworth, Camille Vistica, Nicholas Gumas and more….Congratulations Pied Pipers on a job well done. Chris and Susan — you were terrific.

I’d also like to see the San Mateo and Burlingame High School productions placed on the “Upcoming Events” calendars. We are always remarking how the teens have nothing to do, but I think if they went to these productions, they would really be amazed and amused at the young talent around them. A fun, safe place to go.
