I turned on Monday's Council meeting a few minutes late. There appeared to be a gentleman speaking about mosquitos and West Nile virus. If I'm not mistaken, he was an official, informing people that the mosquitos that buzz around our heads at night are the ones that are the "vectors" and can carry that virus. I'm assuming he means the females that bite before they lay eggs (if memory from Bio serves.) But then he went on to tell the audience/Council to call if the vectors are in the house. Now I'm really confused. We all have had mosquitos in our rooms, the females, sometimes quite frequently. How can he be asking the public to call if we find them in our houses? It must be that I misheard, though I believe Mayor Galligan, who may also have been miffed about the comment, asked him to clarify one more time. Please, tell me that the fellow meant something else. Surely, he doesn't want people calling the Abatement office so often, or? I thought we are supposed to call the Health Dept. if we find dead birds in our yards. Did anyone understand what was said?

I was sitting there stunned that it seemed as if he had said for us to call any time we hear a mosquitoe…hmmm…do you think he really meant it?

He also said that there are a number of ponds that may need to be sprayed. Also he advised us to clear out stagnant water in our backyards.

According to the Examiner today, please report mosquito problems to: (650) 344-8592
And if you find any dead birds, please call: (877) 968-2473
