According to today's San Mateo Daily Journal the good thinking of an anonymous tipster and the quick action of Burlingame High School and police led to the arrest of a student with three hunting knives.

It seems there is a tip line for parents and students who know about illegal activity or dangerous situations. It is 1-877-723-3477. Millbrae cannot afford such a luxury as Burlingame who have a school resource officer who deals with criminal activity and is regularly on campus.

Thank goodness this ended without incident but perhaps the parents of this young man should be snooping in his backpack, pockets, car and bedroom to make sure our students are not at risk.

Was this the kid who also has a real human finger in a zip-lock bag?

If this is true, I hope the authorities know about this student because it sounds serious.

The article mentions that SMHSUD has had probation officers on campuses for ten years, but I think it is probably a lot longer than that, even if the job has changed slightly. In the 70’s we had what we called a “narc” at San Mateo High. He dressed in very hip 70’s fashion, orange shirt, long black leather coat, bell-bottoms and a big afro. Everyone loved him, even the “problem” children. We had a real riot the fall I entered the high school, a fight that carried over from the weekend, into a monday. They shut the whole school down and we had no idea how bad it was, but were just happy to be out of school early. It never happened again while I was there. Though diverse, San Mateo High had very few problems then, ‘ not sure about now.
