  • Among the varied and sundry forms one must fill out to run for public office in Burlingame, there is one form I signed that I thought I'd share with you. It is a voluntary agreement to abide by certain moral obligations during this election and, in addition, repudiate any support given by individuals or groups that violate the following precepts. I have excerpted the three most pertinent (of seven) for inclusion here . The full text can be obtained from City Clerk, Doris Mortensen @burlingame.org:

    1) I shall conduct my campaign openly and publicly, discussing the issues as I see them presenting my record and policies with sincerity and frankness, and criticizing without fear or favor the record and policies of my opponents…which merit such criticism.

    2) I shall not use or permit the use of character defamation, whispering campaigns, libel, slander, or scurillous attacks on any candidate or his/her personal or family life.

    6) I shall immediately and publicly repudiate support deriving from any individual or group which resorts, on behalf of my candidacy or in opposition to that of my opponent, to the methods and tactics which I condemn. I shall accept responsibility to take firm action against any subordinate who violates any provision of this code or the laws governing elections.

  • From the Examiner:

Swiping a customer loyalty card at a Burlingame store may eventually send your ZIP code into a city-commissioned study.

The Burlingame Planning Department decided in July to commission an economic study of the downtown area. Guidelines released to prospective consultants say the study should analyze customer ZIP codes mined from local franchises. "Local chain stores do collect that kind of data and if it's just a matter of where shoppers are from, I would think they'd share. People know that data is collected," said Maureen Brooks, senior planner for the city. She said the city wants to know if the downtown market is unique compared to the rest of Burlingame.

But many stores have privacy policies that prohibit sharing or selling that data. "We would not give out those ZIP codes, for competitive reasons and just as a matter of customer policy," Blockbuster spokesman Randy Hargrove said. Neither would Gap. Other stores handle requests case by case. "Safeway has a very strict privacy policy. We can't evaluate the request until we see exactly what it is," said Jennifer Weber, director of public affairs. Stores might fight harder to protect the information than some customers would. Several patrons of Burlingame's downtown business district Monday afternoon felt comfortable with the city's proposal.

Gary Hamel said the government got everything but his blood type when he emigrated from Berlin. "There are no more secrets. It's very difficult to withhold any information; you really got to run fast. Why hide?" Caroline Berning and a shopping companion also had no problem with it. Other patrons worried. "The government has enough information as it is. I'm not very comfortable about it. But it's already happening," Frank Mena said.

Consultants have until Sept. 2 to submit proposals for the economic study to the Planning Department.

  • I've always liked Target's spunky creative ads, but now comes an article in today's Chron by (my favorite) John King, remarking about the various store designs the firm has come up with for their new stores. Unlike the large chain stores that tend to be identical, regardless of local, many new Target stores are tailored for the site, making them stand out in a normally monotonous mall setting where everything looks like a Big Box. Target works with each municipality to customize their look, whether "historic" Tuscan, or streamlined modern, or funky.

If there is blogger out there that can add some sense to the numbers: good/bad/otherwise, please check it out and report in.

  • Anyone noticed all the used white latex gloves around Howard? Is this a new teenage prank? A fashion statement while shopping at Safeway? Has this taken the place of shoes on the wires? Or has the lady who pulls out the plants and throws them in the garbage moved towards rubber?

    Its very strange!
