Month: October 2003

  • On Monday October 6, City council will consider creating a Burlingame Hall of Fame, adminstered by the Parks & Recs Commission. Already two names are in the hat for the inaugural entrants, Vic Mangini & Jim Murray. The citizens can nominate anyone who should be honored for their community involvement and contributions to Burlingame.

Are we going to go back to Anson himself (he did get the town named after him!) or maybe William Howard (he got a street named after him!). How about John Donnelly who built the first family house here. Or Davenport Bromfield who laid out the streets that make up most of Burlingame. Or George W. Gates early stationmaster, postmaster, banker and realtor. The list goes on of suitable worthies.

Somehow I think this Hall of Fame will be reserved for those who have done most for the council, rather than the town. This sounds like just another way to hand out political patronage.

  • Congratulations to Dan Anderson, Terry Nagel and Russ Cohen for being so well informed, intelligent and answering each and every question honestly and succinctly.

But where were all the residents? It's a shame that more people did not attend. Apart from the creative CBB sumo poster I did not see much publicity. Perhaps I missed the Chamber's posters and flyers. There is no mention of Candidate's Night on the Chamber's website – only the Fresh Market and phases of the moon for October! The Chamber made it so difficult for the CBB to be included as sponsors and it was only the hard work and persistence of Stephen Hamilton and others that made the Forum inclusive and not exclusive.

All in all, Candidate's Night allowed us to make up our minds about who really cares about Burlingame, who will get things done and who are the independent thinkers. We are lucky to have so much choice.

  • In keeping with the Burlingame Voice's positive attitude about our town, we have posted a new poll. What's your favorite free show in town? We have so many opportunities for free entertainment in Burlingame, and each one caters to a different crowd.

The annual Art in the Park and the Jazz and Art on the Avenue events make for fun in the summer sun, as does the Music in the Park series.

The holiday's wouldn't be the same without the annual Tree Lighting ceremony and Santa's arrival on the fire truck. For the more energetic there is the exciting Burlingame Criterium annual bike racing event where we can all marvel at the pro-am cyclists wheeling around our downtown.

And who can pass up a fun evening at Council Council twice a month to participate in our towns politics!

Cast your vote, or add a comment for another Gem of Burlingame!
