Month: June 2014

  • School's Out.  I was biking around town recently which reminded me of the warning phrase from my youth about school being out and kids playing in the street more often.  One of the great things about B'game is kids do still play a bit in the streets–mostly in cul de sacs or on very quiet side streets.  Here are two visual reminders of the season.

And my personal favorite that is hoisted up either so drivers can see it amidst parked cars or to safe a parking space or to keep it from getting run over.

  • When the weather cooperates like it did yesterday, the KCSM Jazz on the Hill event is one of the best things going.  Plenty of free parking, no admission (donations are fine!) and another great line-up with Larry Vukovich, Kellye Gray, local regular Lavay Smith, local grand dame Barbara Dane, and Wayne Wallace cajoling Pete Escovedo up to the stage for a couple of songs.

This year KCSM offered tours of the studio which I was excited to see, especially the LP collection.  KCSM has the third largest jazz collection in the country (after Rutgers University and the Smithsonian).  Here is one of the pair of studios where great jazz is broadcast 24 x 7 at 91.1 FM.

  • The Daily Journal has a piece about Kenny, Danny and Mikey Diekroeger's baseball careers–the two oldest having been drafted into Major League Baseball.

The Diekroeger brothers wreak havoc on sports media. And even MLB Network is not immune.

After it was announced Friday on the MLB Draft webcast that Danny Diekroeger had been selected in the 10th round by the St. Louis Cardinals, even the likes of juggernaut analysts Jonathan Mayo and Jim Callis had to backtrack on initially reading Kenny Diekroeger’s bio of having previously been drafted out of Menlo School.

The trio of brothers from Woodside have plenty in common to confuse. All have graduated from Menlo. Come the fall, all will have attended Stanford, as youngest brother Mikey Diekroeger embarks on his collegiate baseball career. And as of Friday, two have been drafted by MLB. That number could change when the draft concludes Saturday with rounds 11-40.

The trio may be from Woodside now, but they cut their baseball teeth here in B'game playing BYBA ball at Bayside Park, playing summer tournament ball including going to Cooperstown with the B'game teams.  Now that summer is upon us, look for this year's tournament teams practicing and playing out at the Bayfront.  You never know when you will be able to say "I saw him when…..".

  • 9:30 pm  Burlingame —  Russ and I have waited until today's voting closed to introduce a couple of new Terms of Use to the Voice.  We waited because we did not want to "change horses in the middle of the stream"–where the stream was the Controller's campaign, but that race appears to be over in Juan Raigoza's favor at about 2:1.  You can track the results here.

If you read the comments posted on the campaign thread, you will see two behaviors that will no longer be allowed on the Voice.  First, the repetitive posting of the same link over and over and over again as part of a comment will be deleted in the future.  Frankly whether you like or dislike such a link, it is irritating.  "Frances Jones" was too clueless to even realize when Fred was being sarcastic about having seen the news photo in question.  Just like spam, because of the pure irritation of it all it is now disallowed.

The second new Term of Use involves the images one might choose to be associated with one's comments.  The idea behind the images is to add some personality or character to one's post(s).  But using a current, local figure that is NOT YOU will be disallowed going forward. You can use Marilyn Monroe, George Patton or Clooney, Justin Timberlake or Bieber, your dog, a half-eaten Sam's Sandwich or a real picture of yourself.  We don't care.  You just cannot use someone else who is "live and local".  That's all, thanks for blogging on.

  • You will have to click through to the Daily Journal bit about the new Broadway Tennis Center to see the cute picture, but here is the text

From left to right, Frank York, President, W. L. Butler Construction, Burlingame Councilman Jerry Deal, Broadway Tennis Center’s Anne and Horacio Matta, Burlingame Mayor Michael Brownrigg and Burlingame Councilman Ricardo Ortiz break ground at 60 Edwards Court in Burlingame, the new Broadway Tennis Center. The center is the first community-based tennis facility to be built in the San Francisco Bay Area in 20 plus years.

It's tucked right between Mills Creek and Easton Creek off Rollins here.
