  • Our mayor has been sending a letter to select neighbors stating her opposition to underground parking at the Safeway site. Her opinion is that we all want 'at grade' parking so let the council know that!
What ever happened to responsible land usage, choices and pedestrian friendly environments?
No, the mayor wants 'at grade' parking and that's what we shall have. Even if it means a sea of parking at the entrance to Burlingame; even if it means another fried egg development more fitting of somewhere east of here; even if its quite contrary to the design criteria developed by the dedicated Safeway working group; even if its quite at odds with the exciting visions created in the SOBA charrette last year.
Because the Mayor and her ilk don't like to park underground, where its cool in the hot summers and dry in the wet winters, no one should have that choice. It's a pity our mayor doesn't represent the view point of a broader cross section of our city. Not everyone is scared of the underground parking experience.
But I recognize some are, so let there be choice. Some 'at grade' and some structured parking. In the mayor's vision more than 66% of the Safeway lot will be dedicated to parked cars.
Can't we encourage Safeway to get better usage of their land than that? Wouldn't Safeway generate more revenue for themselves and the city, while improving the overall downtown if there was some more active use of the land? Maybe we should be telling the city council that.
    Here's her epistle:

    September 1, 2008
    Dear Friends,
The Safeway Study-Group has finished its work and presented its alternatives to the city council and planning commission last week. The committee put a lot of work into the results they brought forward. There are a few council members who want UNDERGROUND PARKING in the new Safeway development. If, for example, three out of the five council members vote for underground.parkiIlg,that is what Safeway will be_asked to do. I think underground parking is unsafe and I personally will not use underground parking. If there is not enough parking around the store, I propose the developer does parking on the roof. My preference is, however, for plenty of visible parking ON the Safeway LOT.
You can help now BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE. If you do not care to use underground parking, I would really appreciate if you would email our city council and tell them what you want: A nice new, life-style Safeway with plenty of visible parking and PLEASE DO NOT WASTE MONEY ON UNDERGROUND PARKING. You need not identify yourself. Neighbors in San Mateo, San Mateo Park and Hillsborough will all use the new store, if we can get it built, so your friends or connections outside of town can also help if they let the Burlingame city council know the need for a Safeway in town that we can all use and enjoy.
So help right away. Email council@burlingame.org Or write a letter. But the email , if sent, will go to every councilmember immediately.
Thanks so much for helping with this , a wish, indeed a need of so many of us.
    Cordially,
    Rosalie M. O'Mahony

  • Wonderful letter from Adam about the upcoming Relay for Life in Burlingame scheduled for this weekend. An event that showcases courage, a need for a cure and our incredible teens like Adam.
If you have not yet attended the Luminaria Ceremony it really is a very moving event.

    Editor,
When a longtime family friend, Paul Vega, untimely died of cancer five years ago, I turned to the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life as my way of fighting back against this unsympathetic disease. Cancer can strike anyone, even my grandmother, a survivor of Auschwitz-Birkemau who died of brain cancer before I was born. The year Paul succumbed to liver cancer, I decided to captain a team participating in the event. In my freshman year at Burlingame High School, I was the only person to show up for a Really for Life meeting. Just three years later, dozens of youth teams and hundreds of youth participants are saying, We have had enough!? to cancer.
Cancer has personally affected almost everyone in some way, whether it is the passing of a loved one or the ongoing struggle of a friend. These students care about this issue and they have decided to do something about it. At the first Burlingame High School Relay for Life meeting of the year, a full quarter of the school attended, squeezing hundreds into a room that could barely contain the crowd. Since that day less than a month ago, they already helped to raise over $40,000 online alone, not counting check or cash donations. These students are on track to leading this event to meet and surpass its goal of raising over $120,000 for research, education, advocacy and patient support.
These youth are joining community adults on the BHS Track this Oct. 4-5 to celebrate our survivors and fundraising efforts, remember those who lost the battle and fight back against cancer. The event begins at 11 a.m. with the opening ceremony and the Survivor's Lap around the track. Each team then joins the survivors and attempts to have at least one member walking the track for the full 24 hours, as a signal of empathy to those who are constantly fighting cancer. Join us at 8 p.m. for the Luminaria Ceremony, in which we remember those lost to cancer and remind each other that with our efforts, there is hope for a cure. With the dedication of so many young people making research possible, I know in my heart we can conquer this disease and live in a world where people will no longer have to hear the words, You have cancer.?
